Korean Bronzeware Bowl with Foot - S, L

Bangjja, also known as Yugi, is a traditional type of hand-forged Korean bronzeware. The particular bronze used is a symbol of purity as its unique material composition makes it self-sterilizing and naturally disinfectant, and on contact with toxins the surface turns dark, revealing any impurities. Bangjja was traditionally used as tableware for royal families and the King himself, since this discoloration would detect any hidden poisons. This collection is handcrafted by third generation Ingan-munhwage, who are recognized by the government as having achieved the extremely high level skill necessary to make one of the most important cultural properties of Korea.

In addition to its historical importance, there are many unique characteristics of Bangjja bronze ware that balance beauty with practicality. Through use, the specific qualities of the bronze means it burnishes without discolouration, developing a patina overtime that softens its shine but does not dull the warm glow of the metal. Its bronze composition provides these objects with a semi-permanent strength and also acts as an exceptional heat conductor, helping to maintain the temperature of both hot and cold dishes for a long period of time.

Item details: This smaller Bangjja footed bowl is the perfect vessel for side dishes or rice. These bowls form part of a complete set of dishes, plates, spoons, and chopsticks.

Measurements: Small: D: 4.4" H: 2" Large: D: 7.2" H: 3"

Care instructions: When using Bangjja for the first time, wash the surface thoroughly with detergent and a semi-abrasive cloth or sponge, wiping in a single direction. To maintain the lustre of the bronze clean and dry it thoroughly after use to prevent water stains. Diluted vinegar can help with stubborn marks, but as the object reacts to use and its environment these subtle changes mark its life-cycle in a way some people enjoy.
